Young IWO Members Showcase
Young IWO members are set to take centre stage alongside exceptional speakers from the Water Industry as part of ‘Pride In Our Industry’ - the IWO Annual Conference 2008.
Members from a range of organisations and disciplines within the Water Industry will present alongside high profile speakers Dame Yve Buckland, Regina Finn and Phil Woolas, Minister for the Environment.
The Young Persons Forum has become an integral part of the IWO Conference in recent years giving young IWO members the opportunity to showcase their achievements in front of key personnel from within the UK Water Industry.
Speaking about the initiative, IWO General Secretary Lynn Cooper commented: “This part of the event has become increasingly popular amongst delegates offering them an insight into the Industry from a young person’s point of view. It is always refreshing and inspiring to hear from tomorrow’s leaders and it does of course offer the young people an excellent learning experience.”
This year delegates will hear from Niall Darrant of Scottish Water and Stephen Smyth of Northern Ireland Water Service about projects overseas in which they have been involved. They will consider some of the practical, engineering and scientific challenges involved in their work out in Africa.
Claire Lorenc of Essex and Suffolk Water recently organised the successful IWO Eastern Area Winter Seminar. Claire will be reviewing the event; summarising discussions about the challenges and opportunities that climate change is expected to bring for the industry; and looking at what the various companies are doing and how the industry is rising to the challenge.
Sarah Pickard is on Graduate Programme at Enterprise. She will present on her experience as a new entrant to the water contracting industry providing a supply chain view. Steve Youell, a recently promoted Scientist at Portsmouth Water, will focus on how the industry has helped him aspire to and achieve his first class honours degree in marine biology and a management diploma.
Following on from the success this year, IWO is also inviting young members to chair Conference sessions. This is a great CPD Exercise and way of gaining valuable experience. Anybody interested in taking part should contact Lyndsey Campbell at IWO HQ. Full training and guidance will be given.
The IWO Conference will take place from Thursday 3 April – Saturday 5 April 2008 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cambridge. Full delegate places are still available from £399 offering great value for money; particularly given the profile of the speakers. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
