WRc and Welsh Water Scoop Innovation Award for Best Product 2012

Posted: Tuesday 15th January 2013

The Institute of Water Welsh Innovation Awards is an annual event which continues to be a way of showcasing and sharing local innovation. The awards seek to recognise unique talent and the event is now in its 7th year, with a record 300 people attending the evening awards ceremony. WRc and Welsh Water Talent Development team entered and won the Product Category Award for the Production Technician Training Programme Software which was developed for, and implemented by, Welsh Water.

Operators have limited opportunities to experience a range of emergency and failure conditions under real-life conditions and being able to do so in a simulated water treatment works environment with zero risk to compliance is invaluable. WRc has developed a software training and competency assessment tool by linking the inputs and outputs of a dynamic a computer based model (OTTER) to a simulated SCADA operator interface. Trainees are faced with a selection of predetermined scenarios that required them to take action. Their responses and consequences are recorded for post-exercise assessment of knowledge and competency.

Tom Hall, Principal Consultant at WRc comments “This has been a very successful project and we are delighted to have won this award with the Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water team. This is a tool that can be used across the water utilities to provide more interactive training to enhance the learning experience and to increase competency levels”. Feedback has been very positive, from both the trainer and trainee perspectives………………..

“All trainees have thoroughly enjoyed and learned greatly from the simulator package (many have said that it is the best water treatment training they have ever experienced)”

“I rolled out your simulator in N.Wales last week and all the guys were really positive and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found it extremely beneficial.”
