Try-before-you-buy energy savings

Posted: Thursday 23rd December 2010

A new try-before-you-buy service from motor control expert Ralspeed is giving users of motors for industrial and commercial applications an opportunity to find out, easily and accurately, exactly how much money and energy they can save by fitting variable speed drives (VSDs).

For users of the service, Ralspeed carries out an initial assessment of their motor usage and then, provided that the application is suitable, supplies a VSD on a hire/loan basis for up to two weeks. During this trial period, energy usage can be measured and monitored, allowing the potential for savings to be accurately assessed. If, at the end of the trial period, an order is placed for the VSD, the hire charges are credited in full toward the purchase price.

“Most plant engineers and facilities managers know that VSDs save energy, but many don’t realise just how big those savings can be,” said Peter Schaffel, Managing Director of Ralspeed. “Reducing the speed of a motor by just 20%, for example, can cut energy usage by 50%. Our try-before-you-buy service gives motor users an opportunity to see these large energy savings being made under real operational conditions in their own plant.”

Ralspeed offers loan VSDs in ratings from 15 kW to 200 kW. All are supplied as freestanding fully enclosed assemblies to enable fast, easy installation, and all are backed by expert technical support from the Ralspeed team to ensure that operation of the drive is accurately matched to the requirements of the application.

For those who ultimately decide to purchase a VSD, Ralspeed offers additional services. These include providing guidance on the Enhanced Capital Allowances offered by the Government for investments in energy saving measures, and the preparation of applications for the interest-free loans available from the Carbon Trust to assist with the purchase of energy-saving equipment.

Ralspeed provides its customers with comprehensive guidance on motor management to help them secure not only maximum energy efficiency, but also to optimise the performance and reliability of their plant. For applications that are outside the scope of standard off-the-shelf equipment, the company offers custom turnkey solutions and, for all of its products, standard and custom, it provides comprehensive after-sales service and support.
