Severn Trent becomes first UK company to be inducted into the Hydro Hall of Fame

Severn Trent has been recognised for its commitment to green energy by being inducted into the Hydro Hall of Fame.

The company's hydro turbine at Lake Vyrnwy in Powys, which has been in place since 1904, was selected to be inducted. It is the first UK-based hydro turbine to ever be inducted into the hall of fame.

Representatives from the Severn Trent's green power business were given the accolade at the global HydroVision International conference that is taking place in Colorado, USA this week.

Pete Doughty, from Severn Trent, said: "We're absolutely delighted to be inducted into the Hydro Hall of Fame - it's a real honour.

"Our turbine at Lake Vyrnwy isn't the biggest but it's been in continuous operation for more than 110 years, generating clean energy for local homes and businesses.

"During that time the turbine has been replaced just twice, once in 1940 and again more recently in 2009. Three generations of Gilkes turbines stand testament to the longevity of hydropower and this plant will be producing renewable energy for many decades to come."

The original turbine was installed by Gilbert Gilkes and today the company continue to provide maintenance and support to the site.

Darren Wager, from Gilkes, added: "Having been the exclusive turbine equipment supplier to the Lake Vyrnwy generating station is very special for Gilkes Hydro. Three evolutions of our turbines have been installed at the facility since it came on line in 1904, and we very much value this long relationship.

"Credit must be given to the multiple generations of employees, at all levels of Severn Trent, who have ensured this valuable asset remains operational and well maintained."

The turbine at Lake Vyrnwy helps contribute to Severn Trent's pledge to self-generate the equivalent of half of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.
