Director, Water for a Healthy Country Flagship Location: Canberra, Australia (other capital cities may be considered)

Established in 2004 to respond to the urgent environmental and efficiency challenges facing the water sector in Australia, the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship is a highly successful large-scale research operation with CSIRO with current investments of over $100 million per annum involving over 350 full-time CSIRO staff from 14 Research Divisions and with many industry, government and university collaborations both locally and internationally.

The position of Flagship Director is a key leadership role requiring an outstanding leader possessing the vision, tenacity and pragmatism to deliver a large-scale cross-organisational and multi-disciplinary research agenda that delivers demonstrable benefits for Australia.


• Provide effective high-level leadership and management of the Flagship within a complex operating environment.

• Build strategic and collaborative relationships with government, industries and communities to leverage their insights and knowledge, shape the Flagship’s strategic direction and bring scale to the science investments.

• Stimulate and champion delivery of the Flagship’s objectives, and work with stakeholders to ensure implementation of research outcomes.

• Oversee multidisciplinary science teams from within CSIRO and collaborating institutions, to deliver on the Flagship’s goals.


• Demonstrated outstanding leadership capabilities, a self starter with proven ability to gain support for new ideas

• Successful track record in identifying scientific opportunities and prioritising investments, with an ability to deliver large-scale outcomes.

• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with expertise to build top-level relationships across government, industry and the community.

• Commitment to excellence, results and people, with a collaborative, non-adversarial style and seasoned commercial and managerial skills.

• High level knowledge and understanding of water resources and their management in Australia.
