PUMP SUPPLIES COMPLETES WEST HAM CONTRACT

Posted: Tuesday 7th December 2010

Pump Supplies has completed a key temporary pumping contract by Costain, principal contractor for the West Ham Flood Alleviation Scheme.

The £64m West Ham scheme will see sewers in the E7 postcode area upgraded, removing the risk of sewer flooding to over 650 homes in times of heavy rainfall.

As well as enlarging existing sewers through underground tunnelling, a new 2.87 metre diameter, 3.3 km long tunnelled sewer has been constructed under east London between Abbey Mills Pumping Station and Forest Gate.

The tunnel will act as an emergency storage tank, holding the excess storm flows, to the worst predicted level of once in a century, that the drainage system cannot handle, before gradually feeding it back into the system when it is later able to cope. Pump Supplies’ contract involved the installation and commissioning of two no. 100kw Flygt NS3306 pumps at the shaft adjacent to the Abbey Mills Pumping Station, capable of handling flows of 280 l/s.

With the ability to empty the tunnel in just two days, the pumped flows are then fed back into the system for transfer to Beckton sewage treatment works, the UK’s largest WWTP. The project aims to comply with the EU’s UWWTD by intercepting untreated storm-water/sewage flows that enter the River Lee at a single point at Abbey Mills at times of high rainfall and transferring them for treatment at Beckton.

This package of works links indirectly into the billion pound Thames Tideway scheme – coupling improvements to Beckton, Crossness and Mogden WWTPs – with the construction of a storage and transfer tunnel 3.5km long and spur tunnels – to improve the capacity of London’s sewerage system and help prevent flooding in the locality.

Commenting, John Turner, M&E manager for Costain, said: “In the hire time frame, the pumping system was available continuously for three months to allow construction work to continue unhindered.”
