Protecting rivers from misconnected wastewater systems

A new good practice guide on tackling 'grey water' and sewerage misconnections aims to reduce pollution of rivers and protect ecological and bathing water standards.

Water UK, in partnership with the Environment Agency and other stakeholders, has published the statement of an agreed operational approach for water and sewerage companies and the EA to address pollution of watercourses.

The document relates to pollution of surface water (rainwater) sewerage systems through misconnections which cause them to receive household and other 'grey water' or even waste from foul sewers. This then causes pollution of the surface water discharged into rivers.
