Preventing the cost and nuisance of sewer blockages caused by fats, oil and grease

Posted: Tuesday 21st April 2009

Water UK has published best practice guidance to keep fat, oil and grease (FOG), including in food waste and from cleaning the workplace, out of drains and sewers.

The guidance outlines procedures and legal requirements for disposal of grease in a safe and proper manner via a licensed waste contractor.

Disposal of fat, oil and grease into the wastewater system causes blockages in the network and in some cases pollution of streams and rivers.

In some parts of the country up to three-quarters of blockages occur due to a build up of FOG from catering establishments, homes and industrial outlets. The cost runs to millions of pounds each year in clean-up and secondary problems such as flooding.
