Mr Chris Mellor, Chairman of Water Service has opened a new state of the art Wastewater Treatment Works in Omagh, County Tyrone.
It will serve an estimated 47,200 from Omagh and the surrounding area.
Chris Mellor said: "The construction of this new facility represents significant investment in the area providing benefits for the local community and local economy well into the 21st century.
"This treatment plant will also remove nitrates and significantly improve the quality of discharges to the River Strule to achieve compliance with stringent EU standards. This will help to protect the river and demonstrates our commitment to provide modern services to all our customers and to safeguard the environment for future generations.
"The new facility is just one example of the scale of investment required to improve water and sewerage infrastructure throughout Northern Ireland. For the five-year period up to 2007-08, some £1.1 billion of capital investment has been made available to upgrade the water and sewerage infrastructure.
"The introduction of water and sewerage charges will sustain the investment required to protect public health, meet European standards, respond to increasing demand and provide Northern Ireland with a world class modern service."
This is a design and build project with Water Service working in partnership with Purac Charles Brand Consortium Ltd. Atkins Ltd consulting engineers and Sammon Ltd, Chartered Surveyors provided project management assistance.
