MWH first in the UK to gain Achilles carbon measurement and reduction certification

Posted: Tuesday 28th April 2009

Environmental engineering company and water expert MWH is the first in the UK to gain certification, via leading industry body Achilles, for the measurement, reduction and reporting of its greenhouse gas emissions.

MWH has received recognition from the Achilles carbonReduction programme and Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme certification (CEMARS) which is run in the UK utilities sector. The recognition provides external verification of the robust nature and integrity of MWH’s programme to measure and reduce its carbon footprint, in accordance with guidelines stipulated in ISO14064 series 1.

Commenting on the accolade David Smith, MWH’s Director of Business Strategy said: “Climate change and environmental issues have long been at the heart of MWH’s business strategy, alongside meeting and exceeding our clients’ needs. Attaining this certification is further demonstration to our clients of MWH’s commitment to ‘Building a Better World’.

“We share with our clients the determination to carry out business in a responsible and sustainable way, and this certification is confirmation to us and to them that we are doing just that.”

MWH is a supplier of services to many clients across the UK and internationally and has been compiling carbon footprint data since 2002, continually learning, and re-visiting methodologies as knowledge has grown. The company is committed to measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of its operations.

Commenting on MWH obtaining certification, United Utilities Carbon Manager David Brayne, Chair of the carbonReduction programme Steering Group, said: “United Utilities is committed to the Business in The Community May Day network, which encourages carbon reduction initiatives, so we are encouraging our suppliers to collectively help combat climate change.

“I am delighted that MWH – one of our key suppliers – has stepped up and met this challenge head on by joining the carbonReduction programme. Measuring and managing their own carbon foot print is a great way to identify where carbon reductions can be made. I am certain that MWH will obtain great benefits from CEMARS certification and can hopefully inspire others to do the same.”

In conclusion Frances Darton, carbonReduction programme manager, Achilles Group said: “MWH participated in the Achilles carbonReduction programme, utilising its software to measure, manage and actively reduce its carbon footprint. We are delighted to award MWH CEMARS certification. They are the first of our clients in the UK utility supply chain community to achieve this certification, and it will enable them to provide evidence to their clients that they are actively working to reduce their emissions.”
