Murphy gears up for Phase 2 of Gatox scheme

Posted: Friday 5th January 2007

J Murphy and Sons has been awarded a contract from Thames Water Utilities Ltd for the Hagbourne Hill to Fyfield scheme, the second phase of the GATOX (Gatehampton to Oxford) water mains installation project, which aims to ensure the reliability of water supply for the Oxford, South Oxford and Swindon areas.

Under this contract, Murphy will complete the detailed design, construct and install a new 900 mm diameter water main between Hagbourne Hill Reservoir, Steventon Water Booster and the point of connection to the existing trunk main near Fyfield to reinforce the existing supplies to these locations.

The 17.1 km pipeline route, mainly across privately owned land, includes the tunnelled crossing of the A34 trunk road at Hagbourne Hill and the tunnelled crossing of the main railway line near Steventon between Didcot and Swindon. The route also crosses the A417 and the A420 as well as minor roads, bridleways, footpaths and the River Ock.

Phase two is due for completion in September 2007. Murphy is already well underway with the first phase of the project comprising a pipeline running from Cleeve Water Treatment Works to Hagbourne Hill Reservoir.
