Mott MacDonald assists on Singapore water utilities project

Mott MacDonald is currently helping the Public Utilities Board (PUB) of Singapore to rehabilitate, construct and investigate several sewer pumping mains in south west Singapore.
Mott MacDonald’s project team is providing technical advisory services* to the Public Utilities Board for the project through to completion at the end of 2010. This will involve assessing existing pump mains and pipes laid up to 30 years ago. To help with the rehabilitation of the existing infrastructure, the project team will look at the best methods and technologies to use in accordance with the PUB's requirements.
Soon Won Moi, Mott MacDonald’s project manager explained, “We are looking at using High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) to reline and strengthen the piping which it is hoped will extend the life span of the pumping mains for another 50 years. For the investigation work we are using non-destructive methods such as CCTV and direct measurement on the surface of the mains by ultrasonic testing to minimise impact on the mains. For the construction of a new pump main within the Port of Singapore (PSA) vicinity, we will use a pipe-jacking method to minimise the impact on the PSA operation as well as the existing operating pump main.”
