Mike Norton, Technical Director of Kingspan Pollution Control, has been appointed Chairman of UK Rainwater Harvesting Association.

Mike, who is a fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and a chartered scientist, has worked in the water and waste industry since 1970.

His all-round expertise in the water and waste industry covers issues associated with drinking water, swimming pools , sewage and effluent treatment through to water reuse.

Other senior positions he currently holds include Deputy Chair of British Water's Technical Forum and Chair of British Water's Waste Water Engineering Group.

Most recently, Mike has instigated BS8515, a new standard for rainwater harvesting equipment, which is out for public comment now, closing at the end of August, with the first publication planned for December. General feedback from across the industry so far has been very positive.

"I'm delighted by the appointment," Mike says. "Systems to harvest rainwater and treat grey water are set to become a common fixture in homes and gardens throughout the UK, particularly for new-build developments."

"The average person uses around 160 litres of water a day - a fully automated rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling system can reduce that by half and help achieve a level 6 rating within The Code for Sustainable Home's water category. That's a great incentive."
