IRIS – Regional Sewage Treatment Strategy

Posted: Monday 5th January 2009

Faber Maunsell | AECOM has been awarded a commission to deliver a sewage treatment strategy and sewage sludge disposal strategy for the Department of Transport, the key infrastructure provider for the Isle of Man Government.

The IRIS Regional Sewage Treatment Strategy will result in a £85m upgrade to parts of the Isle of Man’s sewerage network, sewage treatment works and sludge disposal facilities. The project will enhance and protect the Island’s built and natural environments whilst facilitating social development.

Faber Maunsell | AECOM has been appointed the role of Technical Manager to deliver a regional sewage treatment strategy, a sewage sludge disposal strategy and associated environmental management services.

David McCune, Associate Director at Faber Maunsell’s Belfast office, said: “The client’s fundamental requirement was for a consultant to generate a coherent, robust and sustainable sewage and sludge disposal strategy. Faber Maunsell has a highly successful Wastewater and Environmental Management team in Belfast who have delivered on major projects throughout the UK.

“This combined offer, supplemented by our sludge and process expertise from our Exeter office, was exactly aligned with the client’s requirements.”

The project is a key capital scheme for the Isle of Man Government. By delivering robust wastewater infrastructure the project will facilitate new residential and industrial development.

The Regional Sewage Treatment Strategy follows on from the original IRIS project which now treats sewage from 66% of the Island’s population. Following a strategic review, backing was given to develop a regional strategy with sewage works to be constructed in the north and west of the Island.

The review highlighted several areas where taking a regional approach would be advantageous, including the potential to deliver the completed IRIS project three years ahead of the original programme and also providing greater flexibility for the future treatment and disposal of sludge.

David Quirk MHK, the Department of Transport’s Political Member with responsibility for Drainage, said: “I’m delighted that the Department is moving forward with the IRIS Regional Sewage Treatment Strategy and we are looking forward to working with Faber Maunsell. We were very impressed with the similar work the Company previously carried out for Northern Ireland Water and the references received.”

The Faber Maunsell | AECOM delivery team will be led from the Belfast office and provide multi-disciplinary services and utilise expertise from our network of offices throughout the UK.
