Innovation to Deliver a ‘Win-Win’ for Business

Speaking at the Water 2012 conference recently, Severn Trent Costain Managing Director, Wayne Earp called for a more innovative approach to water and wastewater services for businesses. Stressing the need for added value ‘behind the stop tap’, where the services of traditional water utility companies often terminate, Mr. Earp said, “Companies can save significant amounts by reducing their water footprint, driving down water use with the help of experts who can assess the full cycle and all the opportunities it holds makes very good business and economic sense”.

The speech follows the recent announcement that Severn Trent Costain has signed up the first business customer to switch water supplier since the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) altered the regulations to allow more businesses to be able to choose their water supplier.

Mr Earp urged the adoption of a holistic approach to water and wastewater services and praised the benefits of the developing competitive market, noting that businesses increasingly want to outsource their water and wastewater activities to a single, expert provider allowing them to concentrate on their core business, and bringing them cost savings in the process.

Mr. Earp explained he had come to this conclusion after Severn Trent Costain had conducted a survey of the opinions of over 100 high volume commercial water users across multiple sectors including commercial, industrial and public sector. This had enabled the Company to clearly understand the challenges faced by organisations who were often dealing with complex industrial processes and large multi-site water infrastructures. The findings showed that what most businesses needed was a single expert supplier who could take responsibility for their water and wastewater activities, manage compliance and reduce costs. It was, he said, a way to find an “Upturn in a Downturn”.

Concluding Mr Earp said, “There are now organisations who can deliver the expertise, resource and bottom line savings that businesses deeply need in this economic crisis. We use the phrase win-win a lot these days, but, with a little innovation the new water competition market can move beyond retail competition and genuinely be a win-win situation”.
