Homes protected

Homes in the Tees Valley are to be protected from sewer flooding.

Northumbrian Water is to invest £3 million to upgrade the sewerage network in Guisborough.

The twelve-month improvement scheme will begin on Monday, February 4 2008 and reduce the risk of flooding to 20 properties in Pine Road and Bolckow Street.

The work will involve upgrading 1500 metres of sewer pipe and the construction of a screened combined sewer overflow.

Combined sewer overflows are designed, and consented by the Environment Agency, to discharge diluted wastewater into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding.

Ian Davison, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “In times of heavy rainfall the quantity of rainwater entering the sewerage network has resulted in flooding to six properties in Pine Road and 14 properties in Bolckow Street.

“This improvement work will reduce the risk of flooding to these properties. I encourage residents affected by the work to come along to the customer information session to find out more and discuss any concerns they may have.”
