Grontmij expands Scottish presence
One of Europe’s largest engineering consultancies Grontmij is developing its Scottish offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow and creating more than 100 jobs.
The company, which is more than doubling its Glasgow office space to 19,000 sq feet, will be able to offer a wider range of skills and services to its clients in Scotland, with new recruits in teams from its transportation, water, building and environment, and systems areas of expertise.Director, Scott Aitken, said: “We’re delighted to be enhancing our presence in Scotland with significant dedicated technical teams working closely with our clients across the full breadth of the services we provide. The growth of our business in Scotland puts us in the top five providers of engineering, environmental and management services and will enable us to provide more thorough support local to our offices and to our remote teams in Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee.”
Operations Director in the water area of expertise, Paul Smedley, joined Grontmij this year to develop the company’s presence in Scotland and relationships with key clients in the area.
Mr Smedley joins from Northumbrian Water Ltd, where he was investment unit manager. In his new role he heads up the water operations team at the Edinburgh office and contributes to strategic development and improving performance. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management and holds a civil engineering degree from Sunderland University and a HNC from the University of Northumbria.
With over sixty new employees joining the company in Scotland already, Mr Aitken hopes the remaining roles will be filled over the coming months.
He said: “This is an exciting time for us and we’re happy to be giving a boost to the country’s economy. Our future business needs and forecasts indicate that we will be using the full capacity of our offices by the end of the year. Our recruitment drive is well underway and has been designed to provide a sustained introduction of new skilled technical and managerial personnel into the business.
“We pride ourselves on offering our employees exceptional development opportunities and excellent benefits, within a positive working environment. Anyone with skills in the water, transportation, building and environment or systems fields who is interested in working for Grontmij should log onto the careers section of our website for further information.”
Among its current projects, transportation consultants at Grontmij’s Scotland offices are designing the A830 upgrade from Arisaig to Loch nan Uamh, which will improve safety and traffic flow, and see the last part of single track trunk road in the UK become a two-lane carriageway. The company’s building team is working on the redevelopment of Scotstoun Stadium for Glasgow City Council, which will form an important part of the city’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
One of Grontmij’s major water clients is Scottish Water, for which it is responsible for providing framework services up to the year 2010. Projects include delivering a quality and standards programme and helping to plan for the next investment cycle from 2010 to 2014.
Grontmij is recruiting technical specialists and middle grade engineers and particularly keen to attract graduates from the local universities to its professional training programmes.
