First customer switched from incumbent water supplier

Posted: Tuesday 8th September 2009

Severn Trent Services Company, Severn Trent Select has switched the industry’s first customer from their incumbent water supplier under the competition regime. Following the Ofwat determination in February this year with Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent Select is able to offer their new customer a shared saving of 1.31%.

In addition to making a financial saving, the customer will receive bills based on actual consumption over the calendar month, in line with their accounting processes. This use of smart meter reading technology will deliver business improvements within the customer’s organisation.

Severn Trent Select was established in 2005 to promote water supply competition in England and Wales. Having completed the process of switching a customer, Competition Manager John Smyth said ‘It has been simpler than we envisaged and has given us a valuable insight into the future market potential’.

The organisation will continue to support competition and contribute to the ongoing debate by identifying commercially sustainable opportunities, both in retail and other contestable areas of water and wastewater services.
