Fabricating ‘special’ Hydro screens

Posted: Wednesday 24th September 2008

Arc Energy Resources, a leading provider of specialised fabrication services and a principal fabricator to Hydro International, has been awarded a contract to provide special screens & Hydro-Brake® Flow Control units being installed as part of a Combined Sewer Overflow project for the city of Namur in the Wallonia region of Belgium.

The screens & Hydro-Brake® Flow Control units form an integral part of the Hydro Storm King® Overflow/Swirl-Cleanse™ systems to be installed at a total of 35 sites in and around the city of Namur and along the river Meuse.

Commenting for Hydro’s Water & Wastewater Division in Ely, senior project manager Martyn Rowland says Arc Energy is fabricating the screens & Hydro-Brake® Flow Control units for Storm King® Overflow sizes ranging from 3m to 9m, as part of Hydro’s key component manufacturing programme for the contract. The screen panels range from 600mm diameter to 2400mm diameter and the perforated stainless steel material is butt welded to 60mm x 60mm stainless steel rolled angle.

Arc Energy project manager Martin Sandles says distortion is a real risk when welding components of this size and thickness, so the welding team in the company’s dedicated stainless steel fabrication facility had to take special care to achieve the close tolerances required. After welding, the finished screens were then coated.

The main fabrication of the Hydro Storm King® Overflow / Swirl-Cleanse™ systems will be carried out under license by the main contractor, CFE EcoTech.
