Environment Agency recognises Bill opportunity

Posted: Monday 11th May 2009

Commenting on the publication of the draft Flood and Water Management Bill and the Government consultation, Environment Agency Chairman Lord Chris Smith said:

"The Environment Agency took on a strategic overview for all sources of flooding in England last June and we have already made considerable progress in implementing this role as far as current legislation allows. We welcome the draft Flood and Water Management Bill, which develops this role further and clarifies responsibilities more broadly for the Environment Agency, local authorities and other bodies, in relation to all types of flooding and coastal erosion for England and Wales.

"We must all acknowledge the real threat posed by climate change and adapt accordingly to protect lives, the environment and the economy. Investment in flood and coastal risk management should continue to rise to help to meet these challenges.

"The draft Bill provides an opportunity for us all to tackle flood and coastal erosion in a more thorough and integrated manner, helping people and emergency responders understand the risks they face and take steps to be prepared.

"The draft Bill also address important water resources and water quality issues, supporting more sustainable overall management of future water resources."
