Dwr Cymru Welsh Water starts work on odour management project at Kinmel Bay

Posted: Monday 15th January 2007

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has started work on a project to reduce the impact of the local wastewater treatment works on Kinmel Bay and the surrounding area.

The £450,000 scheme, being carried out at the Kinmel Bay wastewater treatment works, will see upgrades to existing odour control systems and the installation of new equipment designed to improve the management of odours at the works.

The programme of improvements was devised in collaboration with a working group set up to find a solution to the odour which has affected the area.

The Odour Investigation Group, made up of representatives from Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, Kinmel Bay Town Council and local residents, has met regularly over the past twelve months to look at ways of reducing the impact of odours from the wastewater works in the locality.

By working together, the group has brought together the necessary expertise and knowledge needed to address the issues generated by the wastewater treatment works.

Clara Hughes, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water’s communications representative said: “The entire group’s commitment to resolving this problem really has been the driving force behind getting this project started. As part of its overall odour strategy Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is committed to minimising the effect any of its operations have and is pleased to be delivering this project for the benefit of the local communities.”

The scheme is likely to take around twelve weeks to complete and should not impact on the local community as all work will be carried out within the perimeter of the existing treatment works.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has arranged for members of the Odour Investigation Group to visit the works next week to see for themselves how work is progressing.

Derek Bradshaw a local resident and member of the working group, said: “Working as part of the group has meant we were able to discuss the best way of finding a solution to the problems in a constructive way . We’re glad this project is now underway and are confident that it will bring benefits to the local area.”

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is investing £1.2 billion in its water and sewerage network between 2005 and 2010. Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is owned by Glas Cymru and exists to give customers the best possible service while keeping bills as low as possible. Profits are reinvested in the business to deliver further benefits to customers.
