Communicating with consumers essential for tackling climate change

Posted: Tuesday 27th February 2007

At a recent conference in Berlin, Water UK Chief Executive Pamela Taylor stressed that communication with consumers will be vital in adapting to climate change.

Ms Taylor highlighted four main areas to be taken forward now and in the future. They are: water efficiency; increased adaptability; shared responsibility; and communication with consumers.

“Our EU Emissions Trading Schemes are important, but will not work if we don’t consider the global picture. There is an international communication need here.

"And at national and regional level, it will be crucial to communicate better with consumers. Their support often seems absent from the EU process, but it will be essential for success. This is particularly true in the case of water which is one of our most political industries.”

Approximately 200 people attended the conference, jointly organised by the German Presidency and the European Commission, with other guest speakers from the Commission, the forthcoming Portuguese Presidency and UNEP.
