Business Skills Award for the Water Industry 2008 Winners Announced

Winners of the Business Skills Awards for the Water Industry 2008 were announced at the annual Institution of Water Officers (IWO) President's Dinner.

The Awards were presented by Tim Balcon, Chief Executive at EU Skills, the Sector Skills Council for the electricity, gas, waste management and water industries.

Making the presentations, Tim outlined the aims of the EU Skills Business Skills Awards to be recognition of initiatives which have significantly contributed to an improvement in business skills, for example projects which include resourcing, restructuring, upskilling, productivity drives, innovation and introduction of new technologies.

The EU Skills Business Skills Award 2008, sponsored by Develop Training Ltd, was given to Northern Ireland Water, with Northumbrian Water a close runner up.

Northern Ireland Water were awarded for developing a 'Transformation Toolkit' that has not only received a Level 5 Award in Leadership from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), but has also seen an increase in competitive advantage as staff morale has increased the confidence and competence of managers. The 'Transformation Toolkit' was developed and implemented to enhance the interpersonal and leadership skills of staff and managers.

The EU Skills Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Award, sponsored by IWO, was won by Ray Baldwin of Northumbrian Water. Ray submitted good evidence of planning and an excellent record of CPD activities, showing learning outcomes and how each contributed to his overall goals.
