Big Night For The Big Quiz

Posted: Wednesday 24th September 2008

Just over £16,000 was raised at the recent Water Aid Midlands Big Quiz 2008, with some 49 teams participating on the night.

Water Active’s very own Jez Kirby was the quizmaster, keeping the quiz rounds, food and drink consumption and fundraising on track during the evening. Fines were handed out for unruly behaviour, unauthorised smoking breaks and other ‘misdemeanours’, as the evening raised a record amount for the water industry’s very own charity - Water Aid - thanks mainly to the more conventional fundraising of the raffle, plus some generous sponsorship.

Winners of the Big Quiz were the Consumer Council for Water, masquerading as the Cranium Challenged Workers; filling the runners-up spot was the team from South Staffordshire Water, otherwise known as Stephen Hawkins Football Boots; while in third place was Severn Trent Water’s Chain Gang. Other teams collecting prizes were Chem Resist, who propped up the table - and had eerily predicted their fate with a team name of Mental Blank; while publishing house Faversham House Group scooped the Best Team Name prize for: Robert Maxwell Swimming Club.

Organisation of the Big Quiz was a team effort, with Water Aid, Biwater Treatment, Grundfos Alldos and Water Active doing the ‘hard yards’. Thanks must also go to the evening’s many sponsors, including

ITT Water & Wastewater, EIMCO, Chateau Impney, Welshpool Printing Group, Enpure, Cognica, CIWEM, George Fischer, Chem Resist, Veolia, Field Systems Design, Ashbrook Simon-Hartley, ESI, WEG and Anord - as well as to all those companies who donated some great raffle prizes. Next year’s event takes place on 17 September, so make sure to put the date in your diary.
