ABB drives supplier expands premises to fulfil growing orders

Following 10 years of consistent growth, ABB Drives Alliance member, Inverter Drives Systems Ltd (IDS) has expanded into larger, purpose-built premises on the outskirts of Derby.

The premises were officially opened in May by ABB’s division manager Steve Ruddell at an open day attended by key customers, staff and suppliers: “IDS and their fellow Drives Alliance partners are one of the key reasons why our drives business has grown so phenomenally during the past decade. It is not about shifting boxes. It is the technical know-how of people like Blaise Ford that has contributed to over £60 million of drives sales in the past 10 years.”

IDS, which supplies ABB drives from, 0.18 kW to 400 kW, exclusively to the East Midlands region, as one of the members of the ABB Drives Alliance and is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of variable-speed drives. The alliance is a network of 12 independent companies, strategically located throughout the UK and Ireland that provide a high level of technical competence covering the supply, installation, start-up, operation and maintenance of ABB drives.

The new 490 square metre factory unit houses 16 personnel comprising seven installation/ service engineers, four technical sales staff and four internal support personnel. The shop floor is used to engineer and test drives and assemble panels prior to on-site installation.

IDS’ managing director, Blaise Ford, said: “IDS is experienced in identifying the suitable motor-driven applications that can benefit from the energy saving potential of ABB drives. As a result we are actively contributing to reducing the energy and CO2 emissions of major UK companies such as Severn Trent, Anglian Water, Boots, McDonald's, UK Coal, ABN and British Sugar. It is this power saving aspect of ABB drives and our niche expertise that has allowed IDS to be a continuing success story despite the general recession.”
