£10m project under way

Posted: Monday 22nd January 2007

A project to build a £10m reservoir and pumping station at Barrow, near Bristol, is now well under way.

The first major construction activity on the project is the bulk excavation of some 50,000 square metres of earth, followed by installation of sub surface drainage.

The construction of a pumping station and covered reservoir to hold 40 million litres of treated water is a key stage of the Northern Strategic Support Scheme. The NSSS will provide increased operational flexibility and allow water to be pumped from Barrow Water Treatment Works to the north of Bristol in times of emergency.

The works are being carried out by contractor Costain Ltd and will be completed in conjunction with other related projects to allow delivery of the NSSS by April 2008. These include a 600mm main from Barrow to Hicks Gate, renovation of the 21" main from Stowey to Knowle and a new pumping station at Willsbridge.
