United Utilities Installs a Siltbuster DAF

Posted: Monday 29th February 2016

Siltbuster Process Solutions (SPS) has installed a D100 Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit to provide additional, permanent treatment capacity at United Utilities' Wetheral Wastewater Treatment Works. The installation of the modular DAF took just 2 weeks from the placement of the order, enabling United Utilities to quickly boost capacity with minimal disruption.

The additional capacity was required as the plant at Wetheral was originally designed for 1,000 people. However the site now supports a community of 1,500 with further expansion plans. Additionally, the Wetheral site experiences solids build-up in the biological treatment plant during spring, meaning a more suitable alternative was required.

The D100 Dissolved Air Flotation unit was originally intended to be used for a short term trial period, utilising Siltbuster's hire fleet. This was to ensure the system was the right solution, where the flow to full treatment is 2,810m3 per day. With its effectiveness proven the company then bought the DAF as a permanent solution. Proving the Siltbuster DAF unit as a viable alternative to effectively treat tertiary.

Rich Matthews, General Manager of Siltbuster Process Solutions says: "When planning the upgrade of treatment works, water companies usually have to think in terms of months of planning and preparation. However, the 'plug and play' approach which our modular DAF technology offers means the system can be operational on site within weeks."

This deployment of a DAF by United Utilities is part of a wider trend by water companies who are using mobile lamella DAF systems for a variety of applications including tertiary solids removal, humus solids removal or thickening.

Rich Matthews elaborates: "Water companies are attracted not only by its effectiveness and speed of deployment but also by its space efficiency; for instance the D100 unit is 2.4m wide x 6m long and is treating a peak flow rate of up to 120m3/hr."

"The order from such a prestigious company as United Utilities illustrates once again the growing role of our DAF technology not simply as a temporary solution but as a modular approach to upgrade wastewater treatment plants."
