Sportcrete innovates in New Mexico

Posted: Thursday 6th March 2008

Angel Fire Golf Course and Country Club, in New Mexico is a renowned 18 hole championship course offering challenging golf and spectacular views at every turn. However, even with the beautiful New Mexico sunshine, the rainfall is surprisingly high which that when championships are on, so is the pressure.

With this in mind, the Course Superintendent approached Sportcrete, who have helped some of the World’s most prestigious courses overcome the challenges and potential course closures provoked by inclement weather.

Sportcrete specialises in treating bunkers with a stabilized layer of graded rock that, combined with advanced chemical engineering and laser technology, provides a solid, strong, and porous base for all bunkers. This means that instead of bunkers filling with water, even the fullest bunkers drain in hours leaving the course playable more quickly and efficiently.

The patented, environmentally-friendly Sportcrete material is sprayed on 50mm of specified stone installed throughout the bunker. This creates an engineered porous base that approaches the PSI strength of concrete, as well as a drainage flow rate of water tested at 2500mm of rainfall per hour,

while preventing contamination from below the bunker sub soils. Angel Fires

treated 38 bunkers on their championship course, a job which took just two weeks from start to finish and was managed to ensure the course was playable at all times.

John Green, Superintendent of the Angel Fire Resort said, “The Sportcrete product has revitalized our golf course property. No more problems with draining, No more contamination of the pure sand layer with subsurface clay or gravel and no more water erosion of the pure sand layer from weather or irrigation. The Sportcrete system is a great buffer. The liner system was installed last summer, and we have not seen any disruption from mechanical raking. The process is secure. We have players/members who are very grateful for the bunker renovation, and I attribute its overall success to the Sportcrete product."

The Angel Fire Golf course is recognised as one of the top five courses in New Mexico and one of the best “high elevation” courses in the country, boasting over 6,600 yards of unforgettable high altitude golf and now, it is playable all year round. As John Green said, “"I believe we have the best bunkers in America"
