Siemens to provide ENVIREX chain and scraper sludge collection system for new wastewater treatment plant

Siemens Water Technologies will provide three Envirex chain and scraper systems to Southern Water for the new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) being built to serve the Brighton and Hove region of East Sussex. The chain and scraper system, which will form part of the new wastewater works in Peacehaven, was installed in May 2011 and will become operational in 2012.

The Peacehaven WWTP is the only new build plant of its kind in the AMP 5 cycle. Once operational, the plant will serve 250,000 people and will have a capacity to treat 95 million litres per day. The plant is being built to ensure the safe collection, treatment and recycling of wastewater to the latest European standards currently carried out by Southern Water across the region.

Siemens is supplying three chain and scraper systems for the removal of fats, oils, grit and grease from the wastewater treatment process. Siemens will supply the complete design to Veolia Water Solutions & Technologiesí specification, mechanical installation, and commissioning of the system. The Envirex chain and scraper system removes settled solids from the bottom of the collection tank, whilst also removing grease and other non-settling debris from the top of the tank via a scum tube arrangement. This provides a comprehensive removal of sludge, fats, oils, grease and grit from the wastewater before it goes to the biological treatment phase.

Siemens was able to provide a solution which allows energy savings through its ability to provide a low powered drive for the continual operation, a non metallic chain that will not corrode, and extended supporting warranties.
