Quick Turnaround for Belzona Clarifier Repair

Posted: Thursday 2nd September 2010

In August 2009, a large water supply company was experiencing spalling on two of their concrete clarifier tanks. Due to failure of previous repairs, and the continued spalling, the operation of the revolving distributors was being affected, which would eventually lead to further damage and significant repair costs.

Before applying the Belzona product, the damaged area needed to be prepared using a mechanical wire brush and degreaser to remove any loose concrete and dirt. Exposed metal was cleaned to bright metal and was conditioned with Belzona 4911 (Magma TX Conditioner), which also acts as a corrosion inhibitor, therefore preventing further corrosion.

Belzona 4131 (Magma Screed), a high performance product specially created for concrete resurfacing was then mixed using forced arm mixers and applied to the previously conditioned surface using a trowel. The cracks, pits and holes generated as a result of the spalling were filled and overlaid with 6mm of Belzona 4131 (Magma Screed) which provided a smooth, abrasion resistant surface whilst at the same time, providing protection against chemical attack.

A number of cracks around the tanks required rectification due to shrinkage of the concrete during construction and exacerbated by the weight of the revolving distributor. To accommodate this movement, Belzona 2211 (MP Hi-Build Elastomer) was used to create expansion joints. Belzona 2211 (MP Hi Build Elastomer) was the product of choice due to its chemical and abrasion resistance, together with its elastomeric properties capable of expanding and contracting with the joints as the distributor rotated.

The repair to both clarifiers was completed in less than three weeks which was well within the six weeks allocated by the client. The customer was pleased with the Belzona solution due to its ease of use and quick preparation time. The customer is now actively promoting these products in their region and since this repair was carried out, a further three clarifiers have been repaired using this method.
