Polypipe Civils Provides The Solutions For Sewers

Sewer Pipes

Posted: Friday 3rd February 2006

Polypipe Civils the UK’s leading manufacturer of ducting, drainage, sewerage and environmental systems has provided sewer solutions for a number of different projects by installing its high performance Ridgisewer product.

Ridgisewer is the largest structured wall range in the industry, featuring six sizes from 400 to 900mm. Ridgisewer is manufactured in high strength polypropylene, offering stiffness well in excess of other plastic products combined with exceptional durability.

A recent project on the A19 in Thirsk suffered from a failed concrete pipe due to a sulphate attack and an alternative plastic pipe was required. With superior chemical, impact and abrasion resistance, Ridgisewer has immunity from a sulphate attack or corrosion due to sewer gases.

Due to health and safety concerns and Ridgisewer’s immunity from attack, 536 metres of 450, 500 and 600 mm diameter pipe was installed on site. With a weight of approximately 6% of equivalent sizes of concrete pipe, Ridgisewer’s inherent lightweight properties ensure ease of handling, storage and speedy installation on site. These product benefits therefore ensured minimum disruption was caused to road users enabling a live carriageway installation to take place.

Two projects in Nottingham have also seen the installation of Ridgisewer as a sewer solution. A busy shopping precinct in Nottingham required works to be carried out across a major road whilst addressing health and safety concerns. There was limited storage capacity on site however a local stockist held the product on site until 1,000 metres of 750mm and 600mm diameter Ridgisewer could be installed. McNicholas Construction was able to tunnel under the major road therefore avoiding road closure.

Polypipe Civils also worked with contractor, McNicholas Construction to provide the answer for a residential street requiring a sewer solution. Due to the nature of the road the site compound was restricted to 40 metres in length and access for articulated vehicles was restricted. Storage capacity on site was also limited and a local stockist therefore held the product until it was ready for installation. It was possible to use a tyred excavator with Ridgisewer, therefore the tarmac pavement did not need resurfacing. This also meant less vibration and impact for the residents, enabling 200 metres of 900mm diameter Ridgisewer pipe to be laid effectively and efficiently.

Ridgisewer has a strong yet flexible design which allows the pipeline to withstand some ground movement and differential settlement. It has jointing systems that remain intact even under extreme conditions therefore providing the complete sewer solution.

The Ridgisewer range includes a complete system of couplings, seals, bends, junctions and specialist fabrications. The Ridgisewer range also includes junctions to connect to the Polypipe Polysewer system. Fabrications are available to meet customer requirements including swept back lobster back bends and specialist fittings for back drop manholes.
