Hydrok install a tertiary filtration system for Southern Water to ensure consent compliance

Posted: Monday 16th December 2013

Hydrok, in association with Setford Consultants, recently installed the innovative Mecana Pile Cloth Media Filter at Southern Water’s Hailsham North WwTW, at rapid speed and with minimal disruption to the plant operational capabilities.

Morrison Utility Services, working on behalf of Southern Water were looking for a temporary tertiary treatment process to treat all flows during a lengthy refurbishment of the existing Sand Filters, and approached Hydrok for a solution.

Hydrok's design team offered an SF6/30 Mecana unit comprising of 6 discs with 80m2 of cloth media, capable of treating the works full flow to treatment of 80 l/sec.

Mecana’s Pile Cloth filtration has many benefits compared to conventional technologies, has an ultra-low power requirement and backwashed whilst still in operation. The pile cloth is a 3D filter, and can effectively remove the finest of solids that would normally pass through a conventional 2D Microscreen.

The Mecana unit was installed, commissioned and fully operational in 7 working days, well ahead of schedule. The scope comprised of the media and filter unit from the Mecana manufacturing plant in Switzerland, together with Control Centre manufactured to UK specifications at Hydrok’s factory in Cornwall, with installation by the Hydrok installation engineers.

Southern Water kindly allowed Hydrok and Setfords Consultants to host an open day in June to demonstrate the Mecana system, which was well attended by representatives from all over the UK, including Southern Water, Anglian Water, Severn Trent Water, United Utilities and Black & Veach.

Dave Setford said “we were pleased to be given the opportunity to showcase the Mecana filter in Southern Water, and delighted by the positive response from those attending. A common feedback was how simple and easy to operate the Mecana technology seemed to be”
