Anglian Water customer scoops £12,000 Big Break

It was a day to remember for Anglian Water customer, Linda Howard, of Dereham in Norfolk. On the morning that her bank wrote to her saying she was over her overdraft limit, Linda scooped a £12,000 prize in a competition organised by Bacs Payment Schemes Ltd (Bacs), the organisation behind Direct Debit.

Linda’s prize is part of a nationwide campaign - The Big Break - where bill payers were encouraged to save time and money by paying their regular bills by Direct Debit – while helping to raise money for charity at the same time.

Linda, 55, has been a care worker for over 20 years, helping people live their lives as safely and independently as possible. Although her own three children are grown up money is still tight, and Linda often has to put in extra hours at work to make ends meet.

“I was stunned when I took the call telling me that I had won the £12,000 prize”, said Linda. “Nothing like that has ever happened to me. Now I will be able to fix my car and perhaps have a relaxing holiday in the sun for the first time in five years. I certainly won’t have to worry about any bills or going overdrawn again.”

The Big Break ran from February to July 2013 and as part of its involvement, Anglian Water donated 10p to WaterAid for every customer who switched to pay their bill by Direct Debit. Over 48,000 new Direct Debits were set-up by Anglian Water customers during the promotional period, raising a total of £4,812, which has been donated to WaterAid, an international charity that improves access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation.

Commenting, Mike Hutchinson, Head of Marketing at Bacs, said: “Many congratulations to Linda on being our Big Break winner. This year’s campaign has been incredibly successful and this is due, in no small measure to the support we have received from companies like Anglian Water.”

Spencer Hough, Anglian Water’s Head of Billing and Collections, added: “It’s fantastic that one of our customers has won this prize. We were very keen to work with Bacs to promote the use of Direct Debit as it is a really simple and effective way to pay bills.

“We know paying a bill is never high on anyone’s wish list but choosing to pay by Direct Debit gives our customers one less thing to worry about and helps spread payments across the year. More than that though by switching to this type of payment we’ve been able to help a really important charity – WaterAid - with their life saving work across the world.”
