The Shard, the iconic skyscraper situated next to London Bridge in the heart of the UK’s capital, has been fitted with a suitably iconic drainage solution in the form of the high-performance Ensign cast iron above ground system from iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of leading materials group Saint-Gobain.

Using more than 9,000 metres of Ensign pipework, the drainage solution was selected due to the proven benefits of cast iron, including fire resistance, acoustic properties, strength and longevity, and – particularly – its superior pressure capabilities.

The Shard is the tallest building in Europe. With 90 floors and standing at a height of 1,016 feet, the iconic building contains office space, a hotel, residential apartments, restaurants and viewing galleries, covering 1.4 million square feet in total. The skyscraper takes its name from its design by Italian architect Renzo Piano, intended to replicate a shard of glass.
