ABB turbidity monitors help Southern Water keep supplies clean

ABB turbidity monitors are helping Southern Water perform more extensive monitoring of water turbidity and reduce the chance of potentially harmful organisms getting into the public water supply.

Southern Water’s water treatment sites across Kent, Hampshire and parts of Sussex are installing ABB 4670 series turbidity monitors in boreholes from which water is extracted and fed to treatment works. Steve Tough, ICA section leader for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, says: “At our treatment works, we have several bore holes feeding a common main. Previously we had a turbidity monitor only in the main itself but we now want to monitor each bore hole separately. The benefit of this is that if, for example, pump three is experiencing high turbidity, we can shut that one down and use others.”

Four of the planned 100 turbidity monitors have been installed and according to Steve “are doing very well.”

ABB supplied the monitors installed on a backboard with appropriate piping in place, allowing Southern Water to install the boards in standard cabinets for quick and easy installation. The backboards have space to accommodate a de-bubbler, as well as immersion sensors, providing a complete solution for all drinking water processing, process water and sewage treatment processes.

“During the selection process for the turbidity units, it became clear in discussions with ABB that they could supply everything we needed,” says Steve. “We needed to use a small cabinet to house the monitors so a compact size was vital. The ABB unit is smaller than other similar units, so was ideal for our application. Also, in tests, it was shown to operate well over a wide range of temperatures, from zero to 30 degrees. We also found that it was reliable, easy to calibrate and maintain and gave good results.”

Also important to Southern Water was a supplier that is serious about service. “ABB provides us with a superb service,” says Tough. “We can’t complain about the spares turnaround – under the framework agreement we have with ABB, we will get a repair quote the following day and a repair within seven days.”

The unit of measurement for turbidity is NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). To be totally secure, most water companies have a policy of not exceeding 0.2 NTU in the final drinking water. Accurate monitoring is important to make sure that the water is safe to drink and that companies are complying with Drinking Water Inspectorate standards. The ABB 4670 has ranges configurable between 0 to1 NTU and up to 250 NTU and 2,000 FTU. It comes supplied complete with an auto-cleaning function, which optimises performance and reduces maintenance.

On-line diagnostic of auto-cleaning function provides assurance of performance, while simple maintenance and operator safety is ensured using the ABB dry standard calibration method, by eliminating the use of toxic formazine.

Other features include ultra-low back-scatter, enabling true zero settings thus ensuring accurate and reliable results below 0.1 NTU, as well as configurable auto-cleaning. Both flow-through and immersion sensors are available with auto-cleaning facility.The transmitters have IP66/NEMA4X ingress protection and a high visibility, multi-language display, and the unit also conforms to ISO7027.
