2X Cuts South East Water’s Application Provisioning Costs by 80%

Posted: Thursday 19th May 2011

South East Water, provider of water to over two million customers in South East England, has cut 80% off the cost of terminal server based application to desktop delivery using 2X Software’s Virtual Desktop Server as a highly efficient and lower maintenance Citrix replacement.

By switching to 2X South East Water exchanged escalating per-user licences for 2X’s highly cost effective server based licensing and achieved provisioning business applications to desktops within minutes.

These license cost and efficiency gains reduced South East Water’s application provisioning budget to a fraction of what it was and 2X is now used to deliver all non-core applications to 1000 users, a large percentage of the water utility’s staff and contractors.

Delivering many applications via terminal services was critical to South East Water’s IT strategy when it merged with Mid Kent Water in 2007. As it developed an application delivery approach across the group it sought lower costs, quicker implementation and easier to manage alternatives to Citrix which it used at the time.

“The 2X platform is far easier to maintain, with reduced administration and much quicker application deployment,” said Dean Ashton, IT Infrastructure Team Leader, South East Water. “When we deployed 2X it was installed, running and provisioning applications the same day. Usually you’d expect a lag of weeks in the adoption of these software products. We were astounded by the savings 2X’s server-based licensing could make to our provisioning costs too.”

2X’s ease of management and zero training needs reduces pressure on South East Water’s IT department because any member of the team can provision applications quickly at short notice. In comparison Citrix required a higher skill set and delays in provisioning contributed to lower staff productivity.

“Server based computing is rapidly accelerating as a way of reducing the desktop IT burden and cost in many organisations, but there is a danger that the cost of provisioning applications itself will reduce total ROI,” said Paul Robinson, UK Managing Director, 2X Software. “Many organisations like South East Water are realising that per user licensing and complex systems are not viable if they are to make savings and benefit from radical changes in IT delivery.”

South East Water supplies top quality drinking water to 2.1 million customers in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. Each day it supplies 565 million litres of drinking water from its water treatment works along more than 14,500 kilometres of water mains to customers’ taps. Its supply area covers 5,657 square kilometres.
